Influencer marketing in India: how to pick creators who actually convert

Follower counts lie. How we vet creators for engagement quality, audience fit and content style before a brand spends a rupee on influencer marketing.

Influencer marketing in India has matured fast. Budgets have grown, creators have professionalised, and so have the ways to waste money. Having built a creator brand of our own with a community of over 180,000 people, we have seen both sides of the deal. Here is how we choose creators for the brands we work with.

Ignore follower count first

A creator with 50K genuinely engaged followers in your category will outperform one with 500K followers who scrolled past. The first thing we look at is the ratio of views to followers on recent reels, then the quality of comments. Real audiences ask questions and tag friends. Bought audiences leave emojis.

Check audience fit, not creator fit

Brands often pick creators they personally like. What matters is who follows the creator. For a men's grooming brand like King Rilla, a mid-sized outdoors or fitness creator with a mostly male audience in the right age band beats a bigger lifestyle account with a mixed audience. Ask for audience demographics from the creator's dashboard; serious creators share them without hesitation.

Watch how they handle previous brand deals

  • Do sponsored posts get a similar view count to organic posts, or do they collapse? A collapse means the audience tunes out ads.
  • Does the creator integrate the product into their usual format, or does the post look like a template the brand sent?
  • Do they reply to comments on branded posts? That is where the conversions actually happen.

Brief the story, not the script

The worst influencer content comes from over-specified briefs. Give the creator the two or three things the brand needs said, the one thing it must never say, and the content pillars you are running everywhere else. Then let them make it in their own voice. That is what makes it land as a recommendation rather than an ad.

Measure beyond reach

Every creator campaign we run has a trackable link or code, a set of saves and shares to watch, and a follower lift on the brand account measured a week after the post. Reach is what the creator reports. Enquiries, sales and new followers are what the brand actually paid for.

Micro creators and long-term partnerships

The most efficient influencer spend we see in India is a set of five to ten micro creators on a three-month partnership, rather than one celebrity post. Repeated exposure from a trusted voice converts; a single mention rarely does. This is the model our Creator Network engine runs, from vetting and negotiation to briefing and reporting.
